Matteo moved to New York City in 1990 where he sang as a professional opera singer with the New York City Opera. He performed throughout America and abroad and was provided access to all the great art and architecture of Europe. This exposure inspired him to become an Interior Designer and so in 1998 Matteo began designing Manhattan lofts. In 2000 after receiving New York Times Magazine's "Best of the Millennium" Award for Bathroom Design, Matteo moved to Los Angeles, California and pursued his Masters Degree in Interior Architecture from the UCLA Arc ID & Cal Poly Pomona collaborative program. He started his interior design company Matteo Designs in 2002.
